And Edwards is fading…

From TIME:

The University of Iowa Hawkeye Poll, released at 8 a.m. Monday morning, shows Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in a heated battle on the Democratic side. Clinton leads the poll with 28.9% while Obama garnered 26.6%. John Edwards trails with 20%, a 6-point drop from the last Hawkeye poll in August.

For Edwards, who has basically been living in Iowa (and who parlayed a second place finish there in 2004 into a spot on the Democratic ticket), the results have to be disconcerting. Unlike Obama and Clinton, he has few other strongholds, and a poor showing in Iowa could place his candidacy in serious jeopardy.

Personally, I think Edwards is done. He proved to be much less of a formidable VP candidate, and I just don’t think Dems are going to give him a second shot at the presidency. I think the best he can do is be Secretary of Health & Human Services. Seriously. That’s where I see him fitting in our current political landscape. Because he could go out on the road and really sell the health care issue passionately.

Of course, I was for Dean in 2004 so what do I know about Iowa? :-)

  1. I think if Edwards had any chance at all, the $400 haircuts and the image of him primping in the mirror did him in. Some people think that media obsession over “trivial” quirks like these are unfair. I disagree. I think these images touched a nerve, and exposed an underlying truth. Edwards is a kind of pretty-boy lightweight whose a little vain and needs a lot of attention. He didn’t really do much as Senator, and would have lost his seat had he not resigned during the 04 election. He looks like a guy whose gotten too much attention his whole life for being cute and smart, and charming, and I think voters don’t really take him seriously. And I think the voters and the media are right on this one. Helluva nice guy, though.
